‘Night of the Troglodytes!!’ was held as a secret located

pre-party on Friday to kick off the ‘Customs by the Sea’

held by Kustomrama and ‘Race of Gentlemen’ hosted

by the Oilers CC for some beach racing by pre 1948

motorcycles and pre 1935 autos with speed equip-

ment no older than 1953 to make up two categories for

‘banger’ and ‘flathead’ in Wildwood NJ near Cape May

over the weekend. The Chopper exhibit was hosted by

Harley Davidson and DICE in the court yard of the ‘C’

shaped Surfcomber Motel’s with a loft housing the bar

and band’s for the spectator enjoyment.

Although the party started slowly around 5pm it would

quickly ramp up after registration for the racing near the

busy Oilers CC’s tuning pit for the vintage speedsters

got under way. Beneath neon glow of the historically

protected hotels and other art deco influenced diners as

they were in the fifties bathed the choppers were keen-

ly silhouetted as they came in crisscrossing the many

streets from all directions to descend on the area by the

droves to setup. The rumbling and vintage motor fumes

brought everybody out of their traveling slumber or mak-

ing last minute adjustments behind the old Airstream

trailer rentals to see what all the commotion was about

eventually spilling into the street that was 6 lanes wide

to fill the entire block. Luckily the famous boardwalk of

this south jersey town was in its off season for tourist al-

lowing the police to courteously block off the street ends

being a perk as the show hit its highest attendance to

previous years. Even the neighbors didn’t mind the com-

motion since much of the area was eerily closed till next

summer.

Attendees came from all over the states including Tex-

as, California, North Carolina, and Massachusetts as

well reaching Canada, Ja-

pan, France, Australia, and

Norway just to name a few

with many planning the trip

a year in advance. This pro-

vided a unique experience for

the east coast as one soaked in

the decades of choppers, bob-

bers, trikes, and café racers dis-

playing amazing tank art in every

color and pattern imaginable, long

“vintage speedsters”
