Well here we go again another year has gone by and I for one is looking forward to the
new year’s adventures! I’m not going to lie 2014 was a rough one to say the least. As
many of you know, I set out last spring on my Zombie Apocalypse Tour to produce a
documentary film and photo book on the Kustom Kulture, called “The Kustom Kulture
Circus”.
Yet, just like most epic adventures, the dark forces of evil had conspired to crush my
dreams, with demons waiting at every turn. Evil trolls made the funding I was count-
ing on fall through, leaving me stuck in Myrtle Beach, SC. Fortunately my good friend
Pain of Darkside Performance has a shop in Murrells Inlet, which is just south of Myrtle
Beach. Pain let me set up camp behind his shop, he gave me a key to the shop so I
could use the crapper and plug in to the power. I used the hose behind the shop to take
a shower when I got really ripe. Pain and his beautiful wife Kris along with several of
their friends like Max and other good people from the area, all took really good care of
me while I was there.
While I was there Pain hooked me up with all the cool local people that would be good
subjects for the magazine and documentary project, plus I hit up as many events that
were within a days driving distance like the Hellbilly Hootenanny, and a few others when
my funds would allow it. After spending about five to six months camping out behind
Pain’s shop I think I was beginning to wearing out my welcome, so it was time to go back to Florida
to regroup and prepare to get back on the road in 2015. Not for a moment have I considered giving up on the quest. It’s
do or die!
My biggest problem all a long has been funding, and since I quit my part time job over a year ago, the only income I have
is from the magazine and what ever freelance graphic design jobs I can pick up. Trust me it’s barely enough to survive
at the lowest level. Since last May, when I started this quest I have been living in my van, aka The Renegade Assault
Vehicle. Yes I’ve heard the joke “living in a van down by the river” unfortunately, you can’t even get close to camping
out down by any river, its always illegal. Honestly it’s not really as bad as it sounds, I spent a lot of time setting up the
Renegade van and trailer to make it as comfortable as I could and I’ve continued to make home improvements.
There is no way I can save any money, when you’re living so close to the edge, there is always something that will come
up to suck up what little money you have. So I have been putting almost every dollar I’ve made into my ‘77 Ironhead
project bike which I’ve been chronicling the build in the magazine, using it as kind of my bank in hopes that I can turn
around, and sell it to help cover the cost of my trip and possibly some more camera equipment. I want a drone for my
GoPro and they have this new cool gadget that can have the camera follow you by the tracker, so you can film yourself
solo, no cameraman needed. Way cool got to have one!
If all goes well, I will be hitting the road again this spring,
hope to see ya out there!
